Dunwoody. Located in Northwest Atlanta, Dunwoody is known for its beautiful homes on spacious lots and its quaint Williamsburg style village known as Dunwoody Village. The area was created during a land lottery in 1821 and is named for C.A.Dunwoody,who drew up a petition for a post office as a first priority for the community. After the Civil War,he built the first bridge spanning the Chattahoochee River near Roswell. Dunwoody residents boast a strong community spirit and welcome newcomers through the Dunwoody Newcomers Club. It is easily accessible to Perimeter Mall and downtown Atlanta and is serviced by MARTA mass transit.Dunwoody is just slightly north of Atlanta by about 10 miles, and is close to both city life inside the perimeter, and suburban life outside the perimeter. Today, about 33,000 people call Dunwoody their home, and enjoy being close to such cities as Roswell and Sandy Springs, yet not a far drive at all from Buckhead or the Virginia Highlands!
Dunwoody, named for Major Charles Archibald Dunwoody (a Major in the Civil War), was originally Creek and Cherokee Indian hunting ground. Pioneers moved into the area and transitioned the area into farms, which became known as Dunwoody's farm - then later simply Dunwoody. The first Church built in the area dates back to 1829 at what is now the corner of Spalding and Roberts (Ebenezer Baptist).
The Dunwoody family sold their farm to the Sprills in 1918, and they became a major land owner of what is now modern Dunwoody. You have probably heard of the Sprill Center for the Arts so the Sprill name should sound familiar!
As transportation developed by way of train, a line was built from Atlanta to Roswell, turning Chamblee into the first main settlement north of Atlanta. Dunwoody became the next key stop allowing Dunwoody to continue to develop and thrive.
Following World War II the push to the suburbs began, transitioning dairy farms and forests into sub-divisions (Manget Court and Manget Way), the Perimeter Highway, and shopping centers (Perimeter Mall - opened in 1971, and Dunwoody Village - opened in 1975).
